Achieving negative emissions through oceanic sequestration of vegetation carbon as Black Pellets

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Natural processes and human activities produce vast amounts of dead vegetation which return CO 2 to the atmosphere through decay combustion. If such could be converted into biocoal sequestered on ocean floor, it reduce accumulation atmospheric without involving sequestration in form . Given that raw is unsuitable for large-scale energy applications, a process was developed convert biocoal, termed Black Pellets, solves logistical conversion problems using power generation. Seemingly overlooked properties Pellets—higher density than seawater resistance microbial decay—may offer an environmentally safe way sequestering carbon sea floor. Sequestering by depositing as Pellets deep (oceanic biocoal—OSB) would means achieving long-lasting negative emissions. Sacrificing content deposited pellets require substituting from other sources. substitute lower-carbon natural gas or carbon-free sources, effects less compared nearly 60 100% reduction need geologic bioenergy capture storage (BECCS). confirmed research, OSB addition sparse toolbox emission technologies (NETs) give humankind more flexibility meeting goals Paris Agreement.

Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Background The world's oceans represent the largest potential sink for the carbon dioxide (CO 2) produced by human activities (anthropogenic CO 2). Already oceans contain the equivalent of an estimated 140,000 gigatons of CO 2. The ocean's natural carbon transfer processes span of thousands of years and will eventually transfer 80-90 percent of today's man-made CO 2 emissions to the deep ocean....

Soil carbon sequestration and biochar as negative emission technologies.

Despite 20 years of effort to curb emissions, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions grew faster during the 2000s than in the 1990s, which presents a major challenge for meeting the international goal of limiting warming to <2 °C relative to the preindustrial era. Most recent scenarios from integrated assessment models require large-scale deployment of negative emissions technologies (NETs) to reach th...

Major role of marine vegetation on the oceanic carbon cycle

The carbon burial in vegetated sediments, ignored in past assessments of carbon burial in the ocean, was evaluated using a bottom-up approach derived from upscaling a compilation of published individual estimates of carbon burial in vegetated habitats (seagrass meadows, salt marshes and mangrove forests) to the global level and a top-down approach derived from considerations of global sediment ...
